An educational event incorporating lecture and performance, featuring Joshua Jacobson (founder and director of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, retired Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Northeastern University, and Visiting Professor and Senior Consultant in the School of Jewish Music at Hebrew College), Cantor Louise Treitman (Cantor Emerita Temple Beth David, Westwood; Faculty Hebrew College, Newton; High Holy Day Cantor Beth Hillel Roma, Rome, Italy), Blue Heron singers, and Blue Heron’s artistic director, Scott Metcalfe.

This lecture is presented in tandem with Blue Heron’s April 5, 8pm concert, Song of Songs / Songs of Love at First Church, Congregational in Cambridge.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Joshua R. Jacobson, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Jewish choral music, is Emeritus Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Northeastern University and Visiting Professor in the School of Jewish Music at Hebrew College. He is also founder and artistic director of the Zamir Chorale of Boston. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Harvard College, a Master’s in Choral Conducting from the New England Conservatory, a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati, and an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from Hebrew College. Professor Jacobson is past President of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. He is the recipient of the Cantors Assembly’s Kavod Award, Choral Arts New England’s Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award, and Chorus America’s Distinguished Service Award. Over one hundred of his choral arrangements, editions, and compositions have been published, and are frequently performed by choirs around the world. He is the author of Chanting the Hebrew Bible: The Art of Cantillation and Salamone Rossi: Renaissance Man of Jewish Music, and co-author of Translations and Annotations of Choral Repertoire—Volume IV: Hebrew Texts. His latest project is www.JewishChoralMusic.com, a searchable website with tons of information and recommendations for conductors of all choruses.
